It’s not tough to spot some of the major fantasy baseball weapons at second base. Jose Altuve is my top fantasy baseball option, and other players provide several different specialties that can lead to dominating statistics in category leagues.

Like all positions, though, there are some slippery slopes that you don’t want to go down. Here’s three second basemen with bust potential in the 2018 fantasy baseball draft.

Dee Gordon, 2B, Seattle Mariners

Can an American League team truly utilize Gordon to the best of his abilities? I have my concerns.

Gordon’s value is completely tied with his ability to steal bases. He has at least 58 stolen bases in three of the last four years. His batting average has been over .300 in two of those seasons and he’s coming off a year where he scored more than 100 runs.

After spending seven years in the National League, Gordon is getting a new opportunity in the American League, where teams are less likely to run. And there’s often times where players go from one league to another and don’t have the same success.

I don’t want to take that chance with Gordon. Even though he’ll play center field, he has an average draft position of 33rd overall and fourth among second basemen, so there’s plenty of potential for bust with Gordon.

Brian Dozier, 2B, Minnesota Twins

Dozier has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy baseball owners in recent years. His power surge, combined with his ability to score more than 100 runs in a season, is a nice statistical output for the second base position.

My major concern with Dozier is that his power numbers are improving, but he’s still not a viable option to get on base at a high rate. He strikes out a lot, so if his power diminishes at all, he won’t be as valuable as he’s been in the last few years.

Dozier has an ADP of 34 overall, fifth among second basemen. You can find power in other positions, so if you have some power hitters already lined up for your team, look elsewhere at the second base position.

Robinson Cano, 2B, Seattle Mariners

It’s not often you have two players on the same team who qualify for the same position. Cano is likely to man second base the majority of the time for the Mariners, but much like Gordon, I’d skip Cano.

You can find players in this position that can do more than Cano. And with an ADP of 71 overall and eighth among second basemen, I would skip Cano.

He’s aging and his once great versatility in multiple categories is fading. Other than a surprise year in 2016, he hasn’t been over 100 runs since 2012 and hasn’t been over 100 RBI since 2013. He’s not sipping from the fountain of youth, so even with the discounted price compared to the other options mentioned, I would steer clear of trying to rekindle some magic with Cano.
