The All-Star break offers an opportunity to take a bit of a breather and refocus your fantasy baseball team. The trade deadline is upcoming for many fantasy baseball leagues, so this time of year also provides owners an opportunity to judge where they need the most help and how to go find that assistance.

Luis Castillo, SP, Cincinnati Reds

I’ve grabbed Castillo off the waiver wire before this year for two starts and he wasn’t bad during those outings, giving me hope for another solid run this week.

One of the things I love about Castillo is that he doesn’t walk many batters. He’s allowed two or fewer walks in each of his last six starts. He’s also been good at limiting earned runs, giving up more than three earned runs only once in his last six starts.

What’s not so great about Castillo is that he doesn’t have great matchups with St. Louis and Philadelphia on tap for this week. He also doesn’t go deep into games, turning in less than six innings in five of his last six games.

But I like the opportunity to get at least one quality start and keep the earned runs at a minimum. Those are solid indicators for a good two-start week.

Eric Lauer, SP, San Diego Padres

It’s time to give Lauer another try in this two-start pitcher strategy.

He struggled in his most recent start, but was starting to put the pieces together before that aberration. His July 15 start against the Cubs was the first time he allowed more than three earned runs in a start since May 28.

He also was starting to go deeper in games, with at least five innings of work in each game since May 28.

With decent matchups upcoming for this week, Lauer is worth a pickup on the waiver wire. Lauer begins his week against the New York Mets, the fourth-worst team in MLB in runs scored. He follows that outing with a matchup against Arizona, which owns the third-worst batting average in MLB.

He can exploit those matchups and turn in two solid starts for your fantasy baseball team.
