Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram put on a clinic in week 3, showing how to score in multiple ways for fantasy football running backs.

Kamara tallied nine receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown, while Ingram rumbled to 103 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Both running backs are scoring at will this season, so they are automatic starts thus far in 2019. For the running backs on the fringe, here’s the week 4 fantasy football running backs start ’em, sit ’em guide.

Start

Wayne Gallman vs. Washington Redskins

Running back situations are fluid in the NFL. So that makes this a difficult call because we’re unsure of how much Gallman will actually play.

But with the situation of Saquon Barkley being out with injury, Gallman is the best choice to replace him. Don’t expect Barkley-type of numbers, but Gallman should get the starting nod for week 4.

Gallman should receive the lion’s share of the work in this matchup and the Redskins have been a bottom-half defense against the run so far this season. Keep an eye on this situation, but grab Gallman off the waiver wire and start him in week 4.

James Conner vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Conner has been a major disappointment this season on a team that is underachieving in a major way.

Conner was supposed to man the Le’Veon Bell role after a promising season last year. However, that hasn’t been the case thus far in an offense that has been unable to consistently move the ball up and down the field.

With the Bengals on tap for week 4, though, I’m keeping Conner in my lineup. He’s going to get a decent amount of carries and the Bengals are allowing the most fantasy points per game to running backs. Look for Conner to bounce back and help the Steelers offense start moving.

Josh Jacobs vs. Indianapolis Colts

Jacobs has cooled off considerably since his week 1 outburst. That should have been expected, especially since the Raiders should have one of the worst records in the NFL.

Jacobs will have plenty of work again for a Raiders team looking for an offensive identity. And in that pursuit of an identity, the Raiders will square off against an Indianapolis team that is struggling to stop the run.

The Colts are allowing 5.3 yards per rush attempt, the fourth most in the NFL. Jacobs should get the ball early and often in this matchup, so he should provide RB2 value.

Sit

Frank Gore vs. New England Patriots

Gore has been a decent surprise this season, with touchdowns in two consecutive games. With Devin Singletary out with injury, Gore has received plenty of touches and looks to still have a nose for the endzone.

However, this is not the game to depend on Gore. The Patriots are the best team in the NFL against the run, giving up 2.5 yards per rush attempt.

And there’s no guarantee that Gore will continue to earn that many touches in this offense. The Patriots have been good at making the opposition chase them. If the Bills get in that scenario, there will be little to no value for Gore.

Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers runs for a first down in a game against the Miami Dolphins at Lambeau Field, in Green Bay, Wisconsin on November 11, 2018.

Aaron Jones vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Obviously, if you have to fill two running back slots and a Flex slot, and you don’t have much depth, then Jones is a must start.

However, if you have some depth at the position and an ability to start another running back with potential, then Jones should get a second look at sitting. He was out-touched in week 3 to Jamaal Williams. Two touchdown runs helped salvage Jones’ fantasy day.

But you can’t depend on that every week. The Eagles are one of the best teams against the run in the NFL, even with injury issues. Look for Aaron Rodgers to do most of the damage in this contest, so don’t count on Jones being much of a factor in this contest.

David Montgomery vs. Minnesota Vikings

Eventually, Montgomery should get the starting nod the majority of weeks.

However, against a stout Minnesota rush defense, I’d keep Montgomery on the bench. I’m still trying to figure out how Montgomery will be used in this offense, with several weapons at Mitchell Trubisky’s disposal.

The Bears turned the quarterback loose in week 3, so that could continue in week 4 against Minnesota. If it does, look for the running game to disappear. And even if the Bears focus on the run, the Vikings are too good defensively to count on much fantasy production from Montgomery, who hasn’t been consistent this season.
