Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers hasn’t shown much this season.

He owns a 4.74 ERA and is 1-3. So why is he a recommendation to pick up in this week’s mid-week waiver wire?

Fiers hurled 12 strikeouts in his last outing, which happened to be his season’s first victory. He coupled the 12 strikeouts with one earned run and two walks in six innings. Finding pitchers on the waiver wire who can throw double-digit strikeouts is a rarity.

And this week, Fiers will start Thursday, giving fantasy owners a back-end start to this week. If all goes well against the Dodgers this week and fantasy owners keep him, he will get one start next week, and two the following week, giving owners four starts over the next 2 1/2 weeks.

Things should go well for Fiers against the Dodgers. In two starts and one relief appearance against Los Angeles, he’s 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA.

During the next three starts, the Brewers will square off against the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves. The latter two aren’t as appealing as the first two of his next four starts, but if Fiers doesn’t resort to his April self, fantasy owners could own a diamond in the rough.

During April, Fiers did show an aptitude to throwing strikeouts, notching six and eight strikeout games in two of his four starts. His problem has come down to allowing too many hits, with 32 hits surrendered in 24 2/3 innings this season.

In his last two games, though, Fiers has allowed two earned runs, four walks and totaled 18 strikeouts. If that trend continues, Fiers can earn a continued roster spot on most fantasy rosters in the future.
