FiveDimes recently released over/under win totals for college football teams.

Here is an early-season look at Boston College in the ACC.

Over/Under

FiveDimes has Boston College at 5.5 wins. Last year, the Eagles were 7-5.

The upside

Here’s the best thing about the Eagles. Boston College plays in a conference that should be regarded as one of the weakest in the nation. To go along with that, the Eagles should be favorite in multiple games early in the season.

The Eagles play Maine, Howard and Northern Illinois in three of its first four games. The other game in that four-game streak is Florida State, but Boston College should at least be favorite in two of those games, and should be a toss-up with Northern Illinois.

If the Eagles can escape with three wins in the first four games, then it should have a good shot at six wins, which would be necessary for the over. To help matters, those first four games are a home. The rest of the season includes home games against Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State.

The downside

The reason the Eagles’ number is so low is the away schedule. The Eagles are at Duke, Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

Ouch.

Oddsmakers are making this one difficult. Boston College should start out well. If the Eagles win three of its first four games, it should be poised to make a run at six games.

However, that would be best case scenario. Even if the Eagles win their first three of four games, it still isn’t guaranteed to win another three games, as their three home games likely won’t feature them as heavy favorites in any of them.

And all their road games will likely feature the Eagles as underdogs. So the odds aren’t in the Eagles favor.

The Verdict

This will take some patience, but don’t sweat the Eagles going 3-1 during the first four games. The Eagles won’t likely be favorite in the next three of eight games,

And it’s not guaranteed the Eagles will start 3-1. Northern Illinois may actually be the better pick in the fourth game making 5.5 games a difficult number to attain, considering the Eagles would have to sweep at home and win a game on the road.

That likely won’t happen, so the safe pick would be the under.
