The ACC appears to be a conference that will be wide open throughout the year.

Three of the five conference matchups were within one possession last week. The week before, six of the seven games featuring ACC teams were within one possession.

We’ll keep that in mind as we look at the spreads on a weekly basis.

Here are two games we’ll keep an eye on this weekend. Last week’s betting guide for each power-five conference went 4-6, with a 1-1 mark in the ACC. Overall for the season, the betting guides have been 6-6 in the ACC and 31-29 overall in the power-five conferences.

Virginia Tech (+3.5) at Miami

Miami gave it their all last week on the road against Florida State. That will come to haunt them this week against the Hokies.

This game screams letdown for the Hurricanes. Miami features enough young talent on both sides of the ball that being too emotional for games can hurt.

This week, that will show.

After jumping out to a major lead against Nebraska in week 3, the Hurricanes just haven’t been the same from the second half of that game on. Miami is 0-2 since that game, and hasn’t done enough on defense to stop the opposition. The Hurricanes have allowed 29 or more points in the previous three games.

Virginia Tech hasn’t done much this season either, losing to East Carolina and Pittsburgh at home. But Virginia Tech did get a two-touchdown win last week against North Carolina State, and we’re siding with the betting public.

Miami opened as touchdown favorites before the public brought this down to a little more than a field goal. Miami will need better odds than that to cover this spread. — Go against the chalk with Virginia Tech

Boston College at Clemson (-17)

This may be a sucker bet, but we just can’t pull the trigger on Boston College.

Did you watch the Eagles play last week? If not, you missed a real offensive showdown with Boston College losing 3-0 against Wake Forest. The Eagles had an opportunity at the end of the game, but made too many mental mistakes to win it.

So far, the Eagles aren’t allowing many points, giving up 14 or fewer points in every game this season. Only twice have they allowed even two touchdowns.

The only problem is that Boston College absolutely can’t score. In three ACC games, the Eagles have one touchdown. That’s it.

Clemson’s offense is much better than Duke, Wake Forest and Florida State. This game won’t be close, and even if the number is high, we don’t see the Eagles scoring enough to stay within three touchdowns. — Go chalk with Clemson
