The mid-week waiver wire will come and go Wednesday, so it’s not too late to pick up an extra start in place of a replaceable arm.

If Alfredo Simon hasn’t been picked up yet in your fantasy league, then what are you waiting for? We’ve already discussed Simon’s value  in a previous article, so we won’t dwell on the fact that he should be owned in all leagues. He’s likely already owned, but if he’s not, he is slated to start Thursday at Kansas City, so he would provide a strong outing for any staff.

Another option would be Miami starting pitcher Jarred Cosart. Cosart isn’t a household name, but his April has been stellar. He has a 2.49 ERA in four starts. What’s more impressive about that number is that Cosart surrendered five earned runs during an outing on April 16 against the New York Mets.

In his other three starts, he’s hurled 20 innings, allowing two earned runs. The downside, he’s only notched 12 strikeouts during four outings, but his WHIP is below 1 at 0.91.

His stock should rise for Sunday’s scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies. Cosart’s lone win came against the Phillies, when he totaled four strikeouts, allowing no walks and one run over six innings.

He likely won’t continue this pace, but he’s worth a short in a spot start this weekend.
