Cesar Hernandez is scorching hot for the Philadelphia Phillies.
The second baseman is getting on base, scoring runs and hitting for average. Oh, and he’s added 10 RBIs and steals apiece in the last month.
The only problem with Hernandez is that he hasn’t been this way for the duration of the season. This newfound bat has occurred only recently.
Is it a case of a hot bat or things to come? With his value increasing in fantasy baseball leagues, owners don’t have much time to make that distinction. However, if he keeps up this pace, it would be too much of a solid addition to pass on him.
In his last 23 games, he’s batting .376 with a .442 on-base percentage, ranking him first and second respectively in Major League Baseball among second basemen. His 16 runs rank him seventh among second basemen, while his stolen bases and RBIs are first and ninth respectively among second basemen.
One of his major issues has been getting at-bats. He’s logged 174 at-bats during the season. The top number of at-bats for second baseman belongs to Dee Gordon at 342. Hernandez ranks 28th at the position for getting to the plate.
However, with regular second baseman Chase Utley on the disabled list, Hernandez should see plenty of at-bats in the coming games.
Hernandez is still young, and in his two previous years of MLB service, he played in 100 total games. There’s still a bit of unknown with Hernandez, but with the increased playing time, he will get a greater opportunity to prove his worth for fantasy baseball owners.
