Sometimes fantasy baseball isn’t about individual players. Every once in awhile, the opposing Major League Baseball team makes all the difference.

When scoping out the waiver wire this week, fantasy baseball owners should focus on who’s on the mound against the Chicago White Sox. This isn’t just about finding any pitcher on the waiver wire.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of this strategy, fantasy baseball owners would be wise to pick up left-handed starters against the White Sox.

Chicago has been atrocious against leftys this season. As a team, the White Sox are ranked 29th out of 30 teams in batting average at .204. The only team worse than Chicago at batting average is the Milwaukee Brewers at .197. Why should fantasy baseball owners focus more on the White Sox than the Brewers?

Chicago can’t score runs. The Brewers have scored 48 runs against left-handed pitchers this season. Chicago has scored 33 in only four less at-bats. The White Sox aren’t hitting home runs either, going for six long balls against leftys, bad enough to be ranked 29th again, just one homer above the Chicago Cubs.

The only thing Chicago doesn’t do at an alarmingly bad rate against left-handed pitchers is strike out. Eighteen teams have struck out more against left-handed pitchers than the White Sox. Chicago has struck out 114 times this season against leftys.
