There’s no reason to go crazy over the Seattle Seahawks defense. Sure, it’s the best defense in the NFL.

But why is the defense currently at 61 in average draft position in fantasy football drafts?

The Seahawks are being drafted before NFL players like Cam Newton, Martavis Bryant, Jeremy Maclin and Tom Brady. Fantasy football owners drafting the Seahawks are more into perception than reality.

The Seahawks’ defense is the major reason why Seattle has represented the NFC in the title game during the last two years. Unfortunately for fantasy football owners, the Seahawks defense isn’t the top producing fantasy football defense.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills led the league in standard scoring points in fantasy football, while the Seahawks placed third. In 2013, with one of the best defenses of all time, the Seahawks placed fifth in standard scoring. It’s not about what defense is the best, but what defense can turn the ball over and score on those opportunities.

There’s no reason to go out and risk a draft pick early on a defense. The Seahawks, Bills and Texans are likely the three best choices, but there’s so much more to gain by picking up a quality position player than a defense, which may garner a fantasy football teamĀ a few extra points per week.

The Seahawks are good, but not worth an early draft pick. Go ahead and pass, and wait to draft the defense once your position players are filled with the best possible choices.
