What we got right…

Remember all the way back to April 23, we had this to say about Alfredo Simon.

More than a month later, Simon is still striking out batters and putting in good enough performances to be a solid starting option for fantasy baseball teams.

Simon is 5-2 for the season with 38 strikeouts in nine games. The strikeout numbers aren’t great, but he’s averaging about six strikeouts per nine innings. That’s not horrible for a starting pitcher who has logged 57 innings already this season.

The Detroit Tigers starting pitcher also has turned in a 2.67 ERA to go along with a 1.203 WHIP. His ERA is 18th best in the Major Leagues, while his wins total is tied for 10th. That’s not bad for a pitcher who still may be available in fantasy baseball leagues.

Last season, he did so well in the first half, that many fantasy baseball owners couldn’t dump him fast enough to the waiver wire in the second half of the season when the season got derailed. Don’t expect that to happen this year with Simon owning a starting spot on a team with one of the best offenses in the American League.

What we got wrong…

Thank goodness this only has to do with fantasy sports. Picking NBA games would skyrocket to the top of the list, but this is only about fantasy, so it’s disheartening to share this story written on  April 29.

Jared Cosart had been dealing at that point. And in our defense, we did mention him as a spot start, just to be able to get fantasy baseball owners over the hump for that week.

However, that start that we were so jazzed about, resulted in a loss with three earned runs allowed. In the month of May, Cosart has been anything but hot, going for 14 1/3 innings and allowing seven earned runs and seven walks.

Currently, Cosart is not producing for fantasy baseball owners at all, as he’s on the disabled list for the Miami Marlins.

In a statement far different than in April, we recommend staying away from Cosart for the foreseeable future.
